October hasn’t been an easy month, especially for my training. Messina isn’t the ideal city where you can easily practice any sport, in particular if you are an exchange student without a car. Public transportation is… Ok, I don’t want to go over this again, my forced walks of several kms a day! In a certain way, those have even trained me, physically and mentally. Sicily is THE place where you eat good, from first serving to deserts. I knew this was kind of a “threat” to my BMI but never would I have imagined to come back home having LOST weight. Walking 2-3 hours a day consumes calories indeed.I’ve been really busy there, but I couldn’t stop my running just like that, I needed it and I think I wouldn’t have passed some hard times if I didn’t. I was in an university guest house in a place where it was jus impossible to run. After searching or days for a suitable place, I found there was a 3 km bicycle road in the northern part of the city, which I could reach more or less easily after work. I seeked a gym there for “logistic support” and so I managed to do some weight training AND go for my runs by the Strait of Messina.
Finished this experience now I’m back in Northern Italy. It’s raining, no more Sicilian sun & hot weather, but I’m back home, with my family and my habits. I signed up for a 3 month period in a gym near the place where I run so I can continue the “messina workout” of weight training and running. I feel it’s giving me so much energy - I am more and more convinced that strenght training and “cardio training” are really complementary and should be both pursued to reach that “wellness / fitness / zen ” mind-body state.
